ant measures to establish a post-ganglionic lesion site. Another important avenue of research will be the establishment of symptomatic treatment of autonomic changes in CANVAS. There is good cause to believe that symptomatic treatments established in other autonomic neuropathies (e.g. diabetic autonomic neuropathy) will also mitigate autonomic symptoms in CANVAS. However, given the lack of data regarding this approach in CANVAS, treatment decisions will need to be made on an individual basis and extensive monitoring will be required. In summary, the study by Wu et al. provides evidence that sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic failure is an integral part of CANVAS. In clinical practice this finding adds to difficulties in the differential diagnosis of adult-onset, progressive ataxias. Additional studies assessing the safety and efficacy of existing drugs for counteracting autonomic symptoms in CANVAS are urgently required. Finally, from a scientific point of view, it will be interesting to establish the site of the lesion in CANVAS-associated autonomic failure, and we are convinced that future clinical and pathological studies in CANVAS will shed light on the pathomechanisms involved.

P96: Progress in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease by Gene Therapy
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by the aggregation of two proteins, amyloid-b and hyper phosphorylated tau, and by neuronal and synaptic loss. The progress of gene-modified cells and stem cells is a particularly promising therapeutic method for AD. Gene-Modified Cell-Based Therapy for AD prior to transplantation can be beneficial for increasin...
متن کاملBeta thalassemia gene therapy using lentiviral vectors
Recent years, allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has proved to be the successful cure for patients with thalassemia major, however this is restricted due to limited matched-related donor. Its complications include chronic graft-versus-host disease in 5-8% of patients. So, a molecular approach, such as gene therapy for direct normal beta globin gene transmission, seems quite promising ...
متن کاملPhenol Based RNA Isolation is the Optimum Method for Study of Gene Expression in Human Urinary Sediment
Evaluation of gene expression in urinary sediment has been considered as a promising non-invasive approach for biomarker identification of kidney diseases. Nonetheless, there are several challenges in extraction of RNA from this valuable source of biomarkers, mostly because of the factors that have influence on quality of isolated RNA such as low cellular content. Accordingly, we compared the q...

Objective(s) In addition to several molecular methods and in particular 16S rDNA analysis, the application of a more discriminatory genetic marker, i.e., 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer gene sequence has had a great impact on identification and classification of mycobacteria. In the current study we aimed to apply this sequencing power to conclusive identification of some Iranian clinical ...
